Hall Bain Marie Jar

May 20, 2010

Tomorrow is the May meeting of On Purpose Connections Over Coffee at Mystikal Voyage.  I really enjoy getting together with this fantastic group of women and Mystikal Voyage is a relaxing and inspiring place.  I look for a thrifted treasure to give as a door prize each meeting – and I found it again this month.

I used to collect teapots and was always thrilled to find a vintage Hall pot.  Even if it had a chip, I would buy it to display.  They are heavy and the colors always beautiful.  Tomorrow’s treasure is from the same company. It is what I call a ‘utensil crock’ and what the Hall website calls a  Bain Marie Jar.  It is in excellent condition and the color will fit with a lot of kitchen color schemes.

Thrifted cost – $0.98
On ebay – $25 plus $11 shipping

Hallway Decor

May 4, 2010

I have a short hallway in my house that has had a blank wall for way too long.  Other than a wonderful print in my bedroom that was a gift from a friend I could not find anything that I wanted to display there.  And I liked the print in the bedroom so it wasn’t moving.

Then I went to Salvation Army and found a small, colorful print of tulips that I really liked.  On a previous trip I had picked up a treasure – a heavily carved display shelf.  Total cost for both $4.75.

I hung them both and added three heavy glass votive holders.  I am glad they are heavy because when I brushed against the shelf, it crashed and dented my oak floor.  The votive holders are unharmed.  I am looking for a new way to hang the shelf and will keep you posted on that project.

Keep looking when you have a space that needs that special ‘something’.  It will eventually appear and you will know instantly when it does.

Happy thrifting.

Teapot Giveaway

April 28, 2010

I am going to an On Purpose Networking meeting tonight and did not have a Thrifted Treasure to give as a door prize.  I went to the Salvation Army this morning for half off day and found this Huesnbrews treasure in it’s box.  It has never been used.  The only reason it is being given away is that it is not my color of red – and I already have 3 single serving teapots I really like.  One more example of the excellent deals we can find in stores.  Thank you to the person who donated it rather than put it in a landfill.

Thrifted price:  $0.74
On line new price:  $20.99

Wooden Trivets – Thrifted Treasure

March 31, 2010

Another find at the Salvation Army store.  These trivets are well made and show no signs of use.  They do not have a brand marking but an online search found a set that looks like this and it is attributed to Pfaltzgraff.  Some lucky woman will win this as a door prize at the On Purpose Connections Over Coffee meeting at Bliss Cafe tomorrow.  I am looking forward to getting together with them.

Estimated Retail – $10
Thrifted Cost – $1.50

Polka Dot Cup Thrifted Treasure

March 18, 2010

Yesterday I went to the Salvation Army store and found this bright and cheerful polka dot cup from Lady Jayne Ltd.  It is very large and can be used for a huge dose of caffeine or as a soup bowl.  Unlike some large cups it is not just decorative – it is labeled as dishwasher and microwave safe.   This token of spring is my door prize giveaway for On Purpose Networking at Mystikal Voyage tomorrow.  A wonderful and energetic group of women meeting at one of the most welcoming stores in Baltimore.

Estimated Value:  $11 – $12
Thrifted Cost:  $0.49

Beaded Shoes

March 12, 2010

On my way home from working with a customer today I stopped at the Goodwill to look for Thrifted Treasure.  Looking for unusual accessories or small pieces of furniture.  No luck in that category.  But I did find these wonderful shoes.  They are beaded green satin lined in suede.   They really look like spring and I couldn’t resist.  They have potential to become my most worn shoes – at least until sandal weather.

I rarely buy shoes at thrift stores.  While there are lots of shoes they are mostly out of  fashion, very worn or just don’t look like something I want in my closet or on my feet.  These were a great and unexpected feet treat.

Surprise Shop

February 2, 2010

The Surprise Shop has been in business in Towson since the 1960s.  I did not visit until today.  They have household items and clothing.  There were some very nice canister sets, some punch bowls and a great assortment of glass, china, books and jewelry.  They do not sell furniture.  Most of the items were very reasonably priced with ‘red star’ items 50% off.  This is certainly a place I will keep in mind when looking for decorative items or want something useful for the kitchen.

I was not pleasantly surpirsed by the clothes, most were of the polyester/acrylic variety and seemed old rather than vintage.  There were exceptions – a pink Albert Nippon jacket that had probably once been part of a suit.  It was gorgeous even though the buttons had been moved or the jacket was missing half of them.  They had several items in my favorite winter fabric – black velvet.  Mostly dresses too dressy for me but good quality.  The biggest surprise was the number of wedding gowns.  All well protected and marked at $99.95.  One pretty dress, with sleeves I am sure were made to resemble Princess Diana’s wedding gown, had a note pinned to it with the helpful hint that a seamstress could make the gown strapless.

I’ll stop back on occasion but I don’t think it will become a favorite.

Goodwill Shopping

April 9, 2009

The Goodwill closest to me has become an “Outlet” store.  They sell clothes, housewares, books etc. by the pound.  I was there to check on the household items and furniture.  It seems that the furniture selection is about the same just marked down a lot more.  In my experience Goodwill does not have a lot of furniture I can use but once in awhile a real “find” pops up.  Two weeks ago there was a nice mid-century bench/table.  It had great lines.  And now I regret I didn’t buy it and store it until it fit into a customer’s home (or maybe mine).
I got a little sidetracked.  The point of this post is if there is a Goodwill Outlet near you, keep it on your list.  You can still find some good deals.
I looked in some of the bins for clothes and found an adorable Christmas apron.  It cost about 25 cents.

Goodwill goes upscale

February 9, 2009

Sunday’s Baltimore Sun had an article about the new boutique Goodwill in West Baltimore.  I have not been there yet so I don’t know if they have furniture as well as clothes.  This may be why there seem to be fewer “finds” on the racks of neighborhood stores.

I hope they have changed the habit many of the Goodwill stores have of marking the “boutique” clothes with a balck marker.  On the tag (which makes it unwearable for some people) or even worse on the garment itself.  These items are always priced higher than others in the store and yet they are the ones defaced.  Strange policy.

Value Village Visit

January 23, 2009

Today I visited Value Village Thrift Store at 5013 York Road in Baltimore City. There is very little furniture. They do have lots of housewares. I saw a hand thrown pottery serving tray. Well done but it is still there because it does not fit my style and I do not have a current customer who could use it.
Lots of clothes here. A fair number with tags still on them. They do not have dressing rooms but you can return clothes and shoes within 14 days for a store credit (and it must be used within 10 days).
