Thrifted Treasure – Votives

June 17, 2010

It is time again for an On Purpose meeting at Mystikal Voyage on Friday.  I made another score – these votive lights from Yankee Candle.  They are frosted on the outside and a beautiful green foil on the inside.  I want to keep them.

Similar votive holders on Yankee Candle are $3 each
Thrifted price .25 each

Hall Bain Marie Jar

May 20, 2010

Tomorrow is the May meeting of On Purpose Connections Over Coffee at Mystikal Voyage.  I really enjoy getting together with this fantastic group of women and Mystikal Voyage is a relaxing and inspiring place.  I look for a thrifted treasure to give as a door prize each meeting – and I found it again this month.

I used to collect teapots and was always thrilled to find a vintage Hall pot.  Even if it had a chip, I would buy it to display.  They are heavy and the colors always beautiful.  Tomorrow’s treasure is from the same company. It is what I call a ‘utensil crock’ and what the Hall website calls a  Bain Marie Jar.  It is in excellent condition and the color will fit with a lot of kitchen color schemes.

Thrifted cost – $0.98
On ebay – $25 plus $11 shipping

Hallway Decor

May 4, 2010

I have a short hallway in my house that has had a blank wall for way too long.  Other than a wonderful print in my bedroom that was a gift from a friend I could not find anything that I wanted to display there.  And I liked the print in the bedroom so it wasn’t moving.

Then I went to Salvation Army and found a small, colorful print of tulips that I really liked.  On a previous trip I had picked up a treasure – a heavily carved display shelf.  Total cost for both $4.75.

I hung them both and added three heavy glass votive holders.  I am glad they are heavy because when I brushed against the shelf, it crashed and dented my oak floor.  The votive holders are unharmed.  I am looking for a new way to hang the shelf and will keep you posted on that project.

Keep looking when you have a space that needs that special ‘something’.  It will eventually appear and you will know instantly when it does.

Happy thrifting.

Teapot Giveaway

April 28, 2010

I am going to an On Purpose Networking meeting tonight and did not have a Thrifted Treasure to give as a door prize.  I went to the Salvation Army this morning for half off day and found this Huesnbrews treasure in it’s box.  It has never been used.  The only reason it is being given away is that it is not my color of red – and I already have 3 single serving teapots I really like.  One more example of the excellent deals we can find in stores.  Thank you to the person who donated it rather than put it in a landfill.

Thrifted price:  $0.74
On line new price:  $20.99

Ikea Children’s Tableware

April 20, 2010

Ikea has a line of children’s tableware called Kalas.  There are tumblers, bowls and plates.  They are colorful, lightweight and very durable.  I have owned and used almost daily an earlier version for about 15 years!  I used them so much I have two sets of the tumblers and bowls.  I don’t have the plates.  They come in packs of 6 and are $1.99 per pack.

Here are some of the ways I use them:

  • the bowls are wonderful prep bowls for cooking
  • use both bowls and tumblers for pudding
  • freeze sauces in small quantities in the cups and then remove and store in freezer bags
  • freeze single serving ground meat in the bowls and then remove and store in freezer bags
  • these are my ice cream bowls when I want to limit quantity but see a full bowl
  • just about anything but put them in the microwave
  • they have survived 15 years of the dishwasher

I recently saw similar bowls in Target on sale.  There you only get one color though.

Consign By Design

April 12, 2010

Yesterday I visited Consign By Design.  It has been in a new location since last summer (according to the web site they have been in business for 11 years).  I have driven by many times without  noticing the store.  Yesterday the doors were open and  bright patio furniture was on the sidewalk.  Plus I drove form a direction different than is my habit so it was very evident.

This is is a consignment store with some wonderful pieces.  They also have a lot of new furniture and furniture that has already been rescued and refurbished.  There are no real finds here but if you are looking for good prices on furniture and accessories that are immediately ready to be used in your home, this is a great place to look.

One small thing that I liked was a pillow with the store zipcode embroidered in large, silky numbers.  Since I live in a far from trendy zip, I think it would be a lot of fun to have one of these prominently displayed on my sofa.  Show my “zip pride” if there is such a thing.

PS.  The website lists hours on Tue-Sat, however they were open on Sunday afternoon.

Wooden Trivets – Thrifted Treasure

March 31, 2010

Another find at the Salvation Army store.  These trivets are well made and show no signs of use.  They do not have a brand marking but an online search found a set that looks like this and it is attributed to Pfaltzgraff.  Some lucky woman will win this as a door prize at the On Purpose Connections Over Coffee meeting at Bliss Cafe tomorrow.  I am looking forward to getting together with them.

Estimated Retail – $10
Thrifted Cost – $1.50

Polka Dot Cup Thrifted Treasure

March 18, 2010

Yesterday I went to the Salvation Army store and found this bright and cheerful polka dot cup from Lady Jayne Ltd.  It is very large and can be used for a huge dose of caffeine or as a soup bowl.  Unlike some large cups it is not just decorative – it is labeled as dishwasher and microwave safe.   This token of spring is my door prize giveaway for On Purpose Networking at Mystikal Voyage tomorrow.  A wonderful and energetic group of women meeting at one of the most welcoming stores in Baltimore.

Estimated Value:  $11 – $12
Thrifted Cost:  $0.49

Beaded Shoes

March 12, 2010

On my way home from working with a customer today I stopped at the Goodwill to look for Thrifted Treasure.  Looking for unusual accessories or small pieces of furniture.  No luck in that category.  But I did find these wonderful shoes.  They are beaded green satin lined in suede.   They really look like spring and I couldn’t resist.  They have potential to become my most worn shoes – at least until sandal weather.

I rarely buy shoes at thrift stores.  While there are lots of shoes they are mostly out of  fashion, very worn or just don’t look like something I want in my closet or on my feet.  These were a great and unexpected feet treat.

The Big Tarp

March 10, 2010

Today I went to Bel Air to spend time with a friend and visit consignment and thrift stores in Harford County.  Two of the stores we had visited before were no longer in business.  The most interesting place we visited was The Big Tarp.  It is in the old C-Mart building and from news accounts I read, owned by the family that ran the successful C-Mart for so many years.  Part of the building is a flea market which is only open on weekends (I plan to go on a weekend to visit the vendors there), another part is used for auctions and about 1/3  is used for the sale of deeply discounted items from (frequently high end) retailers – the old C-Mart formula.  Today they had lots of painted furniture – mostly small chests and tables, wonderful prices on some good shoes – if they have your size.  The staff was unpacking a pallet of  Clarks shoes and Birkenstocks covered a couple of tables.  The web site is advertising stock from a ‘Comfort Shoe’ store as well as designer items from “BLOO - – - GDALES“.

If you are in the area it is worth stopping to see what they have.  This is definitely one of the hit or miss places, but when you ‘hit’ it will a great find.  Check the website for information.
